Although the request sounds heart-breaking casual, it is really a cry of desperation because it is almost impossible for some small churches to get a minister, any kind of minister. For over twenty years I have driven the main roads and side roads of Maine visiting many of these churches to inquire about the work being done in them by student ministers from Bangor Theological Seminary. During these years I have kept a diary in which I have recorded the experiences of the young parsons as they served their first parishes. What follows is a gallery of glimpses that exhibit a patience on the part of church people with these fledgling ministers that has inspired my gratitude and wonder. |
